Frequently Asked Questions:

Ques.1 Why should I install Solar ?

Ans. Installing your own solar for generating electricity is like owning a home rather living on rent. Once you have your solar power generating system you are free from paying bills, increase in tariff rates etc.
So mainly following advantages can be availed from solar rooftops.

  •  Consumer becomes generator for his own electricity requirements
  •  Reducing bills to zero depending on size of the system you install.
  •  Elimination of minimum monthly charges

The solar power generated in excess of the owner’s electricity consumption is fed to the grid through a bi-directional energy meter which can be adjusted in the electricity bill.

Ques 2. Who can install?

Ans. All consumers of electricity having sanctioned load of more than 1.25 KW and intending to generate their own

Ques 3. What is the area required for solar rooftop project?

Ans. It requires area of at least 120 sq ft to 150 Sq ft for 1KW.

Ques 4. If my energy requirements increase, can I upgrade the system?

Ans. Yes. Additional solar panels can be added at any time to increase generating capability.

Ques 5. How much electricity does 1KW produces?

Ans. The output depends upon many factors such as sunshine, temperature etc. On an average 1KW produces 1500 units in a year which includes allowance of seasonal factors such as fog and clouds.

Ques 6. What type of warrantee will I get?

Ans. On panels you get 25 years manufacturer warranty. The whole system will have 5 years manufacturer warranty.

Ques 7. What happens on dark/cloudy days?

Ans. The electrical appliances would take power from grid without any disruption. In a grid connect system, as you are still tied to the mains power supply, any deficit will come from the mains grid.

Ques 8. Can I run my AC, fridge on solar?

Ans. In On-Grid system the electrical appliances connected to household work as such. In a grid connect system, as you are still tied to the mains power supply, any deficit will come from the mains grid. So Air conditioning or any other appliance will run as usual.

Ques. 9 What sort of maintenance is required and costs?

Ans. Solar PV systems are solid state of technology and have no moving parts so there is no maintenance required beyond regular cleaning. Cleaning can be done once in a month with regular garden hose. Systems installed close to more polluted areas may require bi monthly cleaning.

Ques 10. What should be the size of my solar rooftop project?

Ans. It can be between 1KW to the max of sanctioned load. Other factors like monthly electricity bill, rooftop area, etc are also considered. Punjab allows 80% solar rooftop rid tie system of total sanction load. Haryana allows 100% solar rooftop grid tie system of sanctioned load.

Ques 11. Are bank loans available for Rooftop Solar System ?

Ans. Most of the banks like IDBI Bank, SBI, Canara Bank have already started loans for Solar under home loan and home renovation loan. Customers can avail loan for Solar as part of home loan, home loan top up or home renovation loan at existing home loan rates and also enjoy Tax benefit.

Ques 12 What is Net metering?

Ans. Net metering is process through which consumer can avail dual benefit by installing a solar power system on shadow free rooftop to generate electricity. Generated power is first used for own use and surplus is fed into grid of utility company. In case electricity produced by Solar system is less than required the intelligent invertor will draw the balance power from Grid. The bill is issued by utility company after adjustment of import and export of power.

Ques 13. What is Gross metering ?

Ans. GROSS METERING : In case of Gross metering all your power generated through Solar System is fed to the grid.Let’s say that you choose to feed in all of the electricity that your rooftop solar system generates directly into the central grid without consuming any of it at your house. Instead, both at night and the day, you consume electricity from the grid. Currently Chandigarh pays Rs 8.51 per unit for Gross metering contract. Therefore the essential difference between net metering and gross metering is that under the former, you are billed only for your “net electricity consumption”, while under the latter, you are paid for the “gross amount” of electricity you feed into the grid, while being charged in full for your grid electricity consumption.

Ques 14. What is ROI of Solar system in India.

Ans. Standard ROI calculations are not quite relevant to solar – as you are spending the money anyway on current bills – so it’s a diversion of funds from the power supplier ie Electricity board/retailer to paying off your own generation plant. The rate of electricity normally increase by 8% every year. Taking all factors into account a normal household can recover the full cost within 5 to 6 years. Installing Solar system is like paying installments for your own home and own it within 6 years rather than staying on rent for all your life. In case of commercial unit installing Solar will recover its cost between 3 to 5 years depending on price of electricity, peak load etc.

Ques 15. What type of Solar system I need to install.

Ans. There are two types of solar systems. Grid Tie and OFF Grid

Grid tied Solar system are most cost effective and ideally suited for homes or business. Government subsidies are mostly paid on Grid Tied Solar system.Grid tie Solar system is connected to the existing electrical grid and allows you to use solar energy as well as electricity from the grid. Grid tie system allow homes or business to get power from either Solar system or existing utility grid. The
intelligent invertor in Grid tie solar system makes it seamless to switch between Grid tied PV system and grid. When your Grid tied system is producing more power than your home or business is consuming, the excess power can often be sent back to grid known as net metering. When your system is not producing enough power during cloudy, foggy or non daylight hours your home can draw power from utility grid. So you are using grid as backup system.

Off Grid Solar System : Off Grid Solar System allow you to store your solar power in batteries for use when the power grid goes down or if you are not on the grid. Off Grid solar system are much more expensive and cannot be expected to provide power for all your loads due to prohibitive cost of batteries.

Ques 16. What type Solar system do I need to install. Are all solar system same. Why there is difference in price.

Ans. Solar system is virtually investment for 25 years atleast. Buying solar system from a reputed brand is very essential that offers a good service and has the capacity to last for 25 years. We discourage you to buy cheap Chinese imports because they are unreliable. When you are investing for 25 years it is important to invest in reliable solar unit. TATA is one of the only few companies in India which makes its own panels with its own cells manufactured in India. TATA Power Solar only uses tier 1 brands and premium products guaranteeing system performance.

Ques 17. Does Government provide any subsidy?

Ans. Central government provide 30% subsidy on the capital cost. The subsidy amount is calculated on the lowest price submitted by different installers to the state bodies like PEDA, HEREDA or CREST.
