Preparing for solar financing: what to have ready

Build a clear project file, understand finance structures and compare total cost, security and risk—not only the monthly instalment.Reviewed

Financing can preserve cash or align payments with expected energy savings, but approval and pricing depend on the borrower, project, property, technology and financier's current policy. Prepare the technical and financial case first, then compare written offers on a common basis. Rates, eligibility and terms should always be verified directly with the provider.

Create a decision-ready project file

Include recent electricity bills, site ownership or occupancy evidence, sanctioned load, the proposed capacity, site survey, equipment schedule, installer scope and an assumption-led generation estimate. Businesses may also need financial statements, tax and registration records, banking information and project approvals. Exact requirements vary by financier and product, so use this as preparation rather than an approval checklist.

Keep technical savings and financing cash flow distinct

First model energy generation and savings before finance. Then add down payment, interest, fees, taxes, insurance and repayment timing. This makes it possible to see whether the project itself is sound and how financing changes cash flow. Solar savings will vary with weather, consumption, tariff, uptime and maintenance; they should not be presented as guaranteed instalment coverage.

Understand the main structures

A direct purchase uses the customer's capital. A loan spreads acquisition cost while ownership generally remains with the buyer, subject to the agreement. Lease, power-purchase or operating models may place ownership and some responsibilities with another party. Availability varies by customer type and provider. Compare ownership, maintenance, insurance, tax treatment, escalation, end-of-term options and early-exit provisions.

Compare written offers on one basis

Check whether the quoted rate is fixed or variable and how it is calculated. Review the total repayable amount, processing and documentation fees, security or collateral, margin contribution, tenure, repayment frequency, moratorium treatment, disbursement milestones, late charges and prepayment rules. Ask for an amortisation schedule or equivalent cash-flow disclosure before making a decision.

Test the business case under pressure

Run a lower-generation case, a tariff-change case and a consumption-change case. Include inverter or battery replacement where relevant, maintenance, insurance and downtime. For businesses, examine debt-service comfort if operations change. For homes, keep the payment affordable without relying on the best savings scenario. ROI and payback remain indicative because future operating and tariff conditions cannot be guaranteed.

BEFORE YOU DECIDE

Practical checklist

  • Prepare bills, site rights, proposed scope and borrower documents.
  • Verify the generation and savings assumptions independently of financing.
  • Compare total repayment, fees, security, tenure and prepayment terms.
  • Stress-test cash flow using conservative operating scenarios.
  • Read ownership, maintenance, insurance, default and exit provisions.
COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Can projected solar savings be used as the guaranteed repayment amount?

No. Savings are indicative and depend on actual generation, consumption, tariffs, uptime and maintenance. Finance commitments should remain affordable under a conservative scenario.

Is the lowest interest rate always the cheapest offer?

Not necessarily. Calculation method, fees, insurance, security, tenure, payment timing and prepayment conditions can materially change total cost. Compare the complete cash flow.

Does Ekam Energy guarantee financing approval?

No. Financing is subject to the chosen provider's credit, technical, legal and documentation assessment. Any lender, rate or term should be confirmed in a current written offer.

Important

This guide provides general information, not a site-specific technical, financial or legal recommendation. Site conditions, tariffs, regulations, incentives, product terms and lender policies can change. Verify current requirements and obtain a project-specific assessment before deciding.
